RP eclipses Vietnam gold haul in Para Games
By Frank C. Calapre

MANILA – Host Philippines won five more golds yesterday even as defending overall champion Thailand established an insurmountable lead after the fourth day of the 3rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations Para Games at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

The four-gold haul – two each in athletics and swimming – allowed the Philippines to surpass its seven-gold output in Vietnam two years ago.

One-armed Isidro Vidisola captured his second gold when he dominated the 800-meter run for the single-arm amputee classification with a time of 2:09.18.

Thailand’s Jummong Muantawi finished in 2:10.45 at second, while Malaysia’s Mow Chai Chong settled for the bronze in 2:134.27.

Victory

The 31-year-old Vidisola’s triumph was a fitting follow-up to his victory in the 1,500m run for the same classification on Friday, which he won in 4:27.94 minutes.

The country’s other gold came from paraplegic Jerico Openia, who clinched the shot put gold for the paraplegics in 7.40m, while countryman Augusto Hernandez captured the silver in 7.14.

Swimmer Arnel Aba also captured his second gold when he ruled the 500m backstroke for the one leg classification with a clocking of 5:09.21. Aba’s first gold was in Men’s 100m breaststroke in the one-leg category on Thursday.

The fifth gold for the day was courtesy of Daniel Damaso in Men’s 200m freestyle for swimmers with visual impairment classification, registering 2:56.29 minutes.

The host team hiked its total to 10 gold medals, 13 silvers and 12 bronzes for fifth place behind Thailand’s 55-31-12, Malaysia’s 32-17-7, Vietnam’s 29-10-5 and Myanmar’s 13-4-3.
