PacMan, Jewelers advance to MVBA championship
By Rommel C. Manlosa
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

THE M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Jewelers get a chance to redeem themselves, while GenSan PacMan will try to prove its win over the Jewelers was not a fluke.

This as the two teams meet in the Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) 1st Gov. Gwen Garcia Cup championship match at the Cebu Coliseum tonight after wins yesterday moved them on top of the standings.

The Jewelers used the aggressiveness of starting guard Woodraw Enriquez to beat the Bacchus Energy Drink/Harbour Centre, 84-86, while PacMan used an early blitz to knock out West Negros College Mustangs (WNC), 69-55, in the opening game.

The Jewelers and PacMan sport a 2-1 slate each, while WNC and Bacchus dropped to 1-2 and will tangle for third.

First half

The Jewelers failed to shake off Bacchus/Harbour Centre in the opening half as they could only manage a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter and a five-point advantage at halftime.

Bacchus/Harbour took the lead for the first time, 53-51, on a triple by Kenneth Koyukang with 1:10 left in the third.

New M. Lhuillier recruit and collegiate standout Jayford Rodriguez ignited the Jewelers back in the groove as he scored a rare four-point play that put M. Lhuillier ahead, 55-53, with 51.8 seconds left in the period.

The visitors had the chance to reclaim the lead but Britt Reroma’s trey rimmed out, while Enriquez drained another triple at the 38.8 mark.

M. Lhuillier then extended its lead after a 15-2 run, putting the Jewelers comfortably ahead, 73-57.

Bacchus/Harbour had a short 6-2 burst to cut down the lead to 12, 66-78, with left 3:20 in the final quarter. One minute later, Magnum Membrere scored Bacchus/Harbour’s lone field goal in the homestretch as the Jewelers piled up more points.
