MANILA – The Philippines won two golds each in table tennis and chess and one in athletics yesterday to remain at fifth place with three days left in the 3rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations Paralympics Games at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

The RP woodpushers led the Philippines’ big haul by winning both the individual and team golds for the visually impaired-physically handicapped and totally blind classification at the GSIS Auditorium in Pasay City.

National Master Henry Lopez scored five points to reap the individual gold in the B1 category, while Indonesians Eddy Suryanto and Maksum Firdaus were second and third.

Fide Master Sander Severino and Alexis Elinon added another gold by topping the team event of the same classification.

Three more

The Filipinos have so far won five of the six golds contested after five days of action, in complete contrast to the RP chess team’s gold-medal shut out during the recent 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag), whose chess golds were swept by Vietnam.

Lopez, Severino and Elinon will go all out to wrap the remaining three golds at stake in today’s final day of the chess competitions.

Josephine Medina, a gold winner in 2003 in Vietnam, made it two in a row when she retained the crown in Women’s table tennis Singles for the wheelchair classification.

Medina later paired with Minnie Ramos to win the gold in Women’s Doubles event.

The country’s fifth gold came from Jerico Opena, who collected his second gold in the Men’s discuss throw for the more paraplegics with a distance of 20.33 meters. He also won the Men’s shot put on Friday.

The Philippines now has a now doubled its gold output in Vietnam two years ago with 14 gold, 23 silvers and 17 bronzes.

Defending overall champion Thailand established an insurmountable 81-44-17 medal haul.
