Will shotgun make cops sharpshooters?

UntilL the death of ex-convict Alemar Luna last Monday night in Barangay Buhisan, PO3 Jerome Java was never heard of.

Java, 30, shot Luna dead using his personal licensed firearm, a 12-gauge Akkar shotgun bought only last November.

Java joined the police service on Sept. 16, 1997, about six months after graduating from his criminology course at the University of the Visayas.

Now chief of the Punta Princesa Police intelligence section, Java belongs to a “normal shooter category under level five” in the marksmanship training conducted by the Cebu City Police Office for all their personnel.

A policeman is considered a sharpshooter when he reaches level 10 or higher in the training.

“It was just luck that I hit him (Luna) in the head,” Java said in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu.

Although born in Barangay Tisa, Cebu City, Java said he moved to Buhisan about a year ago. Luna was his neighbor.

Java said he had no personal conflict with Luna. But when it came to his being a policeman, he received reports that Luna harbored a grudge against him, in relation to the July 21 vigilante-style attack, where Luna survived 14 gunshots in his body.

“He thought I was one of those who shot him,” Java said.

Supt. Pablo Labra II, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (CIIB), advised Java to constantly coordinate with him for security reasons.

Labra said Luna has several sympathizers in Buhisan who may harm Java in retaliation.

“He (Java) should be watchful,” Labra said. (JST)
