Speak out: Cause of our problems By Miguel Paquibot
This has something to do with the plan to change the Constitution. For me, it is a laudable move to solve the current imbroglio.
People believe that the cause of our problem today is our leaders and the present system of government. For me, the problem principally is ourselves and only secondly the political leaders.
We are the ones who placed those politicians in office by selling our votes during elections. Meanwhile, our leaders abused their power by committing graft instead of delivering basic services.
The first four years of the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos was peaceful and fruitful. Unfortunately, he cheated his way to a second term against Sergio Osmeña Jr. Then, to perpetuate himself in power, he declared martial law.
When Marcos was booted out of our country during the 1986 People Power revolt, he left behind a legacy of vote buying and corruption. Now, politicians commit graft to recover their expenses during elections.
We used people power but without favorable results. Why? Because every election, we sell the freedom of suffrage that we acquired through the blood and tears of our forebears.
The current system of government is not the cause of our trouble. But just the same, it should be changed because it is rotten.
Under the Marcos regime, only the Development Bank of the Philippines and the Philippine National Bank were driven to bankruptcy by the administration.
Currently, the financial standing of the Government Service Insurance System, Social Security System, etc. is shaky.
What is aggravating the problem is that almost all government officials and employees already know the art of graft and corruption.
To correct this malady through people power is not the solution because experience has shown us that people catapulted to power abuse their authority, especially those participating in rallies that are of questionable integrity like Jinggoy Estrada, Panfilo Lacson, Imee Marcos, Fortunato Abat, etc., together with cause-oriented groups.
So, for now, let President Arroyo stay in office until the approval of a new constitution.
