Guardo to mayor: Choose among my colleagues

Jonathan Guardo, the resigned Cebu City Sports Commission chairman, gave his unsolicited advice to Mayor Tomas Osmeña in looking for a replacement for the post he abandoned.

Guardo, who quit the sports commission chairmanship after the mayor alleged that he overspent in the last Southeast Asian Games, said that it would be best for the mayor to choose the next CCSC head from the present line-up of commissioners whom Guardo had worked with the last four years.

From within

“It would serve the sports commission best if the mayor would get the next chairman from within. The commissioners I have worked with since I took the post are equally capable and committed individuals, who helped me in materializing the city’s sports programs,” said Guardo.

Guardo is referring to the four commissioners – Jay Aldeguer, Nimrod Quiñones, Calixto Pacquiao and Rolly Diorico – who were appointed by the mayor along with him when he took the CCSC post in 2001.

“These individuals have been working for CCSC for sometime already. They’re very hardworking and their dedication and enormous passion for sports were big contributions in shaping the city’s sports programs the past years. I believe what is important right now is to continue what we have started,” said Guardo.

Grassroots

Guardo along with Aldeguer, Quiñones, Pacquiao and Diorico, formed Team Cebu City, which comprised of the best Cebuano athletes who represented the city in national and international competitions. CCSC also did some grassroots programs to discover and develop new talents the past years aside from participating in international sporting events like the International Chirldren’s Games.

“I only hope that CCSC will continue it sports programs especially now that the National Government has set aside huge funding for the athletes in preparation for the Beijing Olympics. Whoever will be the next CCSC chairman will definitely still have my support,” said Guardo.
