More development, revenues for Toledo City

An increase in Toledo City’s tax collection and more than P50 million in development projects last year were among the highlights in the mayor’s State of the City Address in the city’s 46th Charter Day celebration yesterday.

The celebration was historic for the city, as it was the first time it was graced by a Philippine president.

Mayor Arlene Zambo commended the treasury department for “consistently generating increases in the much-needed revenues for the city.”

She announced that the collection of the real property tax increased by more than two percent, business taxes increased by almost 34 percent compared to that of last year, and overall tax collection increased by 20 percent.

“Because of this, Toledo City ranks number three in the whole Region 7 in terms of revenue generation increases,” she said.
She was also able to implement more than P50 million worth of development projects in the past year.

It includes the putting up of a Sentrong Sigla building, repair of a hospital building, construction of a new slaughterhouse, a new fish section in the public market, construction and repair of day care centers, and electrification and water system projects.

Also last year, a Palace of Justice was built in the city. The Department of Justice funded the project, but Toledo provided the lot as the city’s equity.

There will also be a new city jail, city hall and a commercial village.

She was also thankful to the City Council for continuing to do their share.

“We have shown for the past six years that a united and harmonious relationship between both legislative and executive departments can bring progress and development to Toledo,” Zambo said. (MBG)
