Sayson: PacMan winning, and funds misuse By Homer Sayson Secondovertime
CHICAGO — With the highly anticipated Jan. 21 rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales inching closer with each passing day, PacMan fever is in the air once again, and the frenzy is burning up my Inbox.
And so like most Saturdays, I yield this treasured space to my readers. This time, though, the Q and A session will be overloaded with boxing-related queries:
1) Gladys the feeler (yelloww_pike@yahoo.com): “How’s Pacquiao? I want to hear something about him, something positive, something that would put me back to my normal sleeping habit.”
Don’t fret, dear. All’s well in Pacland. Manny is exceptionally fit, fantastically well-conditioned, and adequately sparred. He is so loose he even found the time to buy himself a new car the other day in Hollywood, a Porsche Cayene which he paid for in cold cash.
2) Bernardo Quirino of San Francisco, California (bernardo.quiriono@usar.army.mil): Is it true that Manny is negotiating a fight for Gerry Peñalosa in LA this Jan. 20? Let me know if it’s true because I would love to see Gerry fight.”
Manny co-manages the career of his younger brother Bobby. I also heard he’s trying to hook up Gerry for a meaningful fight here in the US. Sadly, that’s all I know. But hang on, Bernardo, I’ll ask Manny about this when I see him in Las Vegas in two weeks.
3) JP (pepekaliwete@gmail.com): “The First Gentleman and a host of other Filipino mayors and assorted politicians are rumored to be present at the Pacquiao-Morales rematch. Some people have expressed disgust over these politicians using taxpayers’ money for their trip. How about a write-up on this? Help bring attention to these shameless people.”
Unless there is proof that some of our legislators and government officials are indeed using people’s funds to travel and watch Manny’s fight, it would be foolish and libelous to make such accusations.
PREDICTIONS. As though there was a tiny peephole in Time, where tomorrow can be seen, some of PacMan’s most ardent fans seem to already know the outcome of Pacquiao-Morales II.
Neil Papas (nlpapas@yahoo.co.nz) says “My bold forecast is that Manny pulverizes Morales with the vaunted left straight, knocking the latter out.”
Paul Clarin of Cordova, Cebu (p-clarin.crew@furetank.se) nods wholeheartedly: “Pacman has the arsenal...And he will wait until Morales is nearly out of gas before he will end the show in the late 9th round.”
I hope you’re right, guys. But it ain’t gonna be that easy. Morales (48-3, 34 KOs) has an iron chin and he is capable of going the distance, as shown in his last five fights, all of which went to 12 rounds.
P.S. I got a lot well-wishers during the Holidays. Unfortunately, I can’t thank them all, but here’s a few I’d like to acknowledge. Dr. Rene Josef Bullecer (renejosef@yahoo.com), Ben Tan, (ryance898@yahoo.com) and my old hoops pal from Damiana’s Garden in Banawa, Peter Paul Velmonte (peterpaulelmonte@yahoo.com).
DENR’s PR diva, a long-haired goddess named Mia Embalzado (mia_embalzado@yahoo.com) wrote about her golden retriever, a lovable dog named Kobe, who likes to play with a tennis ball. Unsurprisingly, this Kobe also hates to pass the ball. Yikes! Mia, my sweetie pie, have you thought of trading Kobe?
Congrats to Manuelito Cerna (litocerna@yahoo.com) and his wife Ruby, both loyal Second Overtime readers. Their daughter Jaclyn Ophir Sevilla Cerna recently became a registered nurse.
Finally, a shout-out to one of my good friends at USC Talamban, Julius Tan. I’d also like to greet Julius’ inspiration, Jean Lu.
