Thirsty Cup football tilt starts today at Ayala

It's the Year of the Dog, and the rest of the seniors division teams will have to run like mad canines to catch up with the streaking Hiroshi FC as the 2005 Thirsty Cup opens today at the Sacred Heart School–Jesuit field.

Twenty-eight teams have registered in the Men’s division, including the visiting Dumaguete FC, Silliman University, Foundation University and Bais, as they try to dislodge the defending champion Hiroshi, which is riding on a seven-title streak.

Crazy Horse FC, which lost the Aboitiz League Division A crown late last year after fighting to a 2-2 draw with Hiroshi, will go for vengeance.

Some 147 teams have registered for the third edition of the football festival, which is Cebu’s first football tournament of the year.

In last Wednesday’s launching at the Bright Academy compound, Harold Buot took the accurate kicker award, Hanesin Anthony was the fastest dribbler and Richard Romero wowed the crowd with his moves to win the juggling contest.

Kevin Velasco also showed he was the master in the digital domain after topping the Fifa 2006 Playstation contest.

Meanwhile, Hiroshi split up into two squads for the Thirsty Cup, dividing the team according to age, and has added two guest players, one from Denmark and one from Italy.

One team will be led by Voltaire Montebon, Rocky Garciano and Italian Demetrio Calo. The other team will be made up of Frederick Alazas, Martin Bontia, Josaphat Sacil, Junard Aguilar and Peter Crawford of Denmark.

Curiously, an errant ball at Hiroshi’s regular practice venue, the Cebu City Sports Center, led the way for Calo’s stint with the team. Calo, a regular jogger, picked the ball up, and before giving it over, juggled the football.

“He was good. Voltaire approached him and asked if he wanted to play,” assistant coach Francis Ramirez said. (ML)
