83 special pharmacies sell cheap drugs in CV
Depressed and remote areas with no access to medicine can now buy cheap drugs from the Botica ng Barangay (BnB), with 83 outlets in Central Visayas.
The BnB was initiated by the Department of Health in response to Malacañang’s call to lower prices of medicines.
Last Friday, President Arroyo inspected a BnB outlet in Toledo City.
She has said she’ll ask the Cabinet to release P35 billion to pump-prime the economy. Part of the amount will be spent on health services and half a billion will be used to subsidize Philhealth premiums for the poor.
Three barangays of the city have availed themselves of the program.
There are 16 BnB outlets in Cebu, 19 in Bohol and 48 in Oriental Negros.
A BnB may be owned or managed by non-government organizations, community organizations, local government units or barangay councils.
A community health worker trained in pharmacy management by DOH must tend to the store. The outlet must also be supervised by a licensed pharmacist.
The Department of Health or the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office will provide each outlet with P25,000 worth of medicines.
The outlet must also be supported by the local government unit and must be located in a public facility like a barangay hall, barangay health station or a space donated to the government.
It must also have a special license to operate from the Bureau of Food and Drugs. (MBG)
