Goalies’ crucial stops help CIS, Don Bosco win titles By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Staff Reporter
As they say, football teams live and die by their goalkeepers.
Miguel Red and Jake Allen Vicen proved this maxim true as they carried their teams to championship wins in yesterday’s 3rd Thirsty Cup at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit field.
Red staved off the final shot of Don Bosco-UC in the Under-17 shootout to the propel Cebu International School (CIS) to the title, 2-1, while Vicen had a similar title-clinching move, stopping the second kicker of San Roque FC in the Players-8 finals shootout for Don Bosco College’s 1-0 win.
It was CIS’ fourth straight title in the U17, a streak that started last year. They also won the CIS Friendship Cup in March, SRFC in August and Aboitiz Football Festival in September.
Bad start
The CIS booters’ latest conquest started badly after Paolo Cases, kicking first in the shootout, missed his shot.
Trailing, 0-1, CIS got a lucky break after referee Louis Arriesgado ruled Delvon Kim’s shot in, a call that drew a protest from the DB-UC bench claiming the ball bounced off the lower corner and did not go in.
After reviewing Kim’s shot through a videotape from a local TV crew, organizers upheld the referee’s decision.
Judgment call
“According to Fifa rules, it was a judgment call, and just like the Hand of God of Maradona, the decision stands,” tournament director Neil Montesclaros told the UC coaches.
Andre Antigua then drilled in his shot to give CIS a 2-1 lead and the title.
Earlier, the CIS Pink Ladies pulled an upset over the visiting Foundation University, 1-0, also in a shootout with Georgia Guidicelli scoring the lone goal.
It was the third straight event where CIS swept the Boys and Girls U17 crowns after the San Roque and Aboitiz Fiesta tournaments.
FU, which blanked its elimination-round opponents by four and five goals, had difficulty playing CIS. Both teams earlier had a scoreless draw in their elimination-round encounter.
“I think they (FU) expected to win because of their impressive wins in the elimination round,” CIS coach Rhodora Toledo said.
Meanwhile, Bright Academy took the Girls 12 crown after topping their double round robin event. Book Yong Soon, nicknamed “Sky,” won the MVP award.
The Boys 12 and Boys 14 finals will be played today.
