USC stude rules tourney
National Prisaa-bound Kim Steven Yap pulled off another masterful championship win.
Capping off an unbeaten performance with a win over veteran player Carlos Moreno III in the seventh round, Yap accumulated six points to cop the championship in the Talisay City Open Blitz Chess Tournament at the Sto. Niño Review Center.
The University of San Carlos freshman, who is part of the Region 7 team to the Private Schools Athletic Association national meet next month, received P3,000 for his championship feat.
Francisco Abugho, who beat Anthony Makinano in the final round, matched Yap’s six-point output but his 23 tiebreak score was half a point behind Yap’s tiebreak points to settle for the second spot.
Makinano wound up third, edging out Joel Fernan and National Master Rogelio Enriquez on tiebreak points after the three players ended up with 5.5 points apiece.
Fernan, who won over Erwin Ababat in the final round, settled for fourth, while Enriquez, who beat fellow master Carlos Cabuenos, was fifth.
The tournament was supported by Howard Coloyan, Cogon Ramos Barangay Captain Danilo Alfafara, Moises Torres and the Sto. Niño Review Center. (JCT)
