Sugbo, Gahapon ug Karon opens today
Sugbo, Gahapon ug Karon, an exhibit of two generations of artists with Cebuano origins opens at 6 p.m. today, January 10 at the SM Art Center on the 2nd floor of SM City Cebu.
SM City is presenting the event in support of the Garbo sa Sugbo Foundation led by Ricardo Cardinal Vidal and Gov. Gwen Garcia.
The exhibit was conceived by Cebuano artists Gig de Pio, Red Mansueto and Caesar Velez who are now based in Manila and who thought of tracing their roots and linking up with the Cebu they all love. At the same time, it supports the efforts of the Province of Cebu to promote and develop local art and culture.
Gahapon is represented by Cebuano artists who were active proponents of the art movement in Cebu during the seventies together with the late Fr. Virgilio Yap and Master Martino Abellana. Those times saw the birth of galleries and art exhibits, frame shops and art lessons. Modern art was introduced and abstract art began to be part of art appreciation. The artists that emerged during this period included Kimsoy Yap, Gig de Pio, Red Mansueto and Caesar Velez.
Karon will include Manila-grown artists Dom Briones, Junyee and Alan Rivera whose hearts and minds have roots which could be traced to Cebu because of their bloodlines and Pandy Aviado, Buddy Ching and Nap Jamir who will all add a different dimension to the exhibition because of their mindsets and experience.
Other featured artists include Florence Cinco, Anthony Fermin Lofranco, Joe Mari Picornell, and Ernie Ybanez. The exhibition is a show of two groups of artists practicing their art in Cebu and Manila. For some of the artists, the event is the first showing of their work in Cebu but the common thread is their Cebuano roots.
The exhibit will run until Monday, January 23.
