Makinano wins San Fernando chess tourney
Anthony Makinano followed up his title win in December with another championship in the San Fernando Blitz Chess Open at the Eng’r. Jusayan Farm in Panadataran, San Fernando, Cebu.
Makinano, who won the Rose Pharmacay Kay Sarap Magmahal Chess Open last month, defeated Harold Diano in the final round to secure the top spot with a near-perfect 6.5 points. Makinano received P2,000 for his championship finish in the seven-round Swiss event.
Taking the runner-up spot was Diano’s older brother Eden, who defeated Voltaire Sevillano in the final round, with 5.5 points.
Harold got stuck at five points and edged out two other players for the third spot. Also with five points were Richard Natividad and Bahneh Tabada, who wound up fourth and fifth.
Sevillano rounded out the top six players with 4.5 points.
The tournament was sponsored by Councilor Dodong Jusayan and organized by the San Fernando-based Cebu South Chess Club headed by president Rey Loquez.
