SHS-J defeats USP, 62-51, in ML Kwarta Cup debut

Defending champions Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) used a 20-9 blitz in the third quarter to overcome a sloppy first half for a rousing 62-51 debut win over the University of Southern Philippines (USP) in the Aspirant division of the BAP-Visayas/MLSDF 3rd ML Kwarta Padala Cup at SHS-J Gym last Saturday.

In the other Aspirant games, Hoop It Up Basketball Clinic survived an end game rally of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) for its first win in two games, 49-48, while the University of San Carlos (USC) took an effortless forfeiture win over the Don Bosco College (DBC).

Patrick Jacobe’s masterful execution at the backcourt helped the Jesuits dropped a telling third- quarter blitz for its title retention bid. Jacobe center Ortiz, Blanco and Candari combined for 39 points to topple the equally talented USP squad.

Meanwhile, the USC Baby Warriors needed an extra period to defeat Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology Baby Skyblazers, 68-62, for its second win in the Juniors division at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Gym in Punta Princesa.

The Baby Warriors held their ground as they limited the Baby Skyblazers with only two points in the overtime period for their second win.

Adrian Alforque and the come-backing Rafael Flanco combined for 30 points for USC while Gilbert Violango Jr. was the only SCSIT player to score in double digit with 23 points.

Also in the Junior division, powerhouse University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers allowed the Consolacion National High School to open the game on a 7-0 run before controlling the tempo the rest of the way for a lopsided 70-59 win, while the DBC Greywolves survived a five-minute drought in the second quarter to win, 61-45, over the USJ-R Baby Jaguars.
