Tribu Sugbu wins 2nd title

It’s two-for-two for Tribu Sugbu.

The Cebu-based team backed by Skygo and SirLitz exacted sweet revenge over host Valencia Golden Harvest following a methodical 73-62 victory, to win its second National Basketball Conference (NBC) pre-season title during the 5th Charter Day Open Invitational Basketball Tournament held at the Valencia City Gym.

Defeat

After suffering a 67-70 defeat during the elimination round, the Tribesmen made sure this time that they won’t crumble into pieces in the titular match as Alex Cainglet wrecked havoc from all over, while Doroteo Almacin proved his Most Improved Player award last season was just a step to winning the top individual plum next season.

“The all-out team effort gave us this win. This is a fitting follow-up to our title in Antipolo last month. And I hope this roll will continue,” said Tribu Sugbu coach Al Solis.

In their first meeting, the Tribesmen wasted a 17-point lead at the start of the final quarter to lose their hold of the top of the team standings during the classification round.

The other night, the Cebuanos kept the Golden Harvest within distance before making the final strike in the fourth quarter to win the title.

Cainglet topped all scorers with 20 points while Christian Nicdao added 11 and Bernie Ursal finished with 10 for Tribu Sugbu’s title-clinching win.

Mythical Five

Joining Almacin in the Mythical Five selection were teammates Christian Nicdao, Ronaldo Bucao, North Cotabato’s Marvin Martinez and Pagadian’s Arian Daja. Solis also took the Coach of the Tournament award.

In the curtain raiser, expansion team Pagadian Explorers survived the endgame rally of North Cotabato Braves to win the third-place trophy following a scary 78-76 win.

Today, Tribu Sugbu will open another campaign as it travel to Pagadian City to join the Mayor Sammy Co Open Invitational Tournament - the third leg of the NBC-Pre-season tournament.

Tribu Sugbu (73) -- Cainglet 20, Alamacin 12, Nicdao 11, Ursal 10, Ducay 8, Yabut 5, Bucao 2, Sevilla 2, Calo 2, Mercado 1, Butel 0, Luga 0. Valencia (62) -- Cruz 12, Clavel 10, Braga 9, Navales 8, Ayson 6, Berami 5, Cabili 5, Taligatos 4, Numeran 3, Cesar 0, Adams 0, Celiz 0. (RCM)
