Ballad on pains of OFW families wins in Pop Fest
A ballad for a father working overseas won the grand prize in the 26th Cebu Popular Music Festival last night.
Composer Dennis Gregory Sugarol’s “Tatay Pauli Na” earned P150,000. It was the first time Sugarol took a gamble in a composition contest.
He said Gweendolyn Suico-Crescencio based her lyrics on the lament of her children about their father.
The song’s interpreter, 10-year-old Grant Dosdos, was named the best among those who performed last night at the New Cebu Coliseum. He received P10,000 for the special award.
“Bitoon Mo” by Jun Aliño Cabillar placed second and got P100,000, while “Laylay sa Inahan” by Glenn Salve finished third among 12 finalists.
Salve received P50,000. His song, interpreted by Marlon Louise Busano, was also the Texters’ Choice and received a P5,000 prize.
All finalists each received P15,000 and plaques.
Dosdos, a grade four student from Nivel Hills, Lahug, Cebu City, gave a heartfelt performance that drew on his real-life experience. His father works abroad as a seaman. He is an only child. (AIV)
