Dress decently, Rama appeals

No skimpy outfits, please.

Cebu City Vice Mayor and Sinulog Foundation Chairman Michael Rama made the appeal amid concerns that Sinulog participants, especially those aboard floats, will cause a scandal during the festivity.

In the past Sinulog grand parades, it wasn’t unusual for floats to carry female models in revealing clothes.

Men ended up riveted to the floats, but not necessarily because they were admiring the designs.

“I advise participants not to wear skimpy and too-attractive outfits that can create distraction. It does not go well in a Christian-dominated population. If anyone will make a show, that is actionable,” he said.

And those who undress will surely be punished, he warned.
Classes on Jan. 16

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña also announced yesterday that classes will still be held on Monday, Jan. 16.

He said it would be part of the sacrifice for the Sto. Niño, especially that students cannot afford to skip classes following their poor showing in the National Achievement Test.

Besides, classes will be suspended for a few days during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit this December, so the students might as well attend classes this Monday, he said.

“Just go to school na lang. Anyway, our Sinulog grand parade is not school-based,” he said in a dyLA interview.

Vehicles

While the children were asked to give up the customary day-after-the-parade holiday as their Sinulog “sacrifice”, a private company has offered to do its share.

The Cebu City Govern-ment’s guests will be ferried by at least five new vehicles of Norkis Trading Co. Inc.

Osmeña yesterday agreed that Norkis will provide five vehicles, with two more as back-up, of its Legacy First model, which looks like a cross between a car and a mini-double cab.

According to its letter of intent, Norkis will provide the fuel and drivers, while the Sinulog Foundation will shoulder the expenses in case of accidents, traffic violations, loss or damage of the units.

Legacy First will also be called “the official car of the Sinulog Mardi Gras 2006.”

The City will have to return the vehicles to Norkis before 5 p.m. on Monday, though. (RHM)
