Guv welcomes request by Tan for jail transfer

“That's one less problem.”

This was Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia reaction to the request of alleged shabu laboratory mastermind Calvin Tan to be transferred to another jail.

The Provincial Government manages the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) where Tan is detained.

“Kami diha, bagsakanan ra gyud intawn sa mga ipang-commit nga mga priso og naa namo ang problem sa pagbantay, pagpakaon, apilan pa sa mga intriga (The CPDRC is a dumping ground, and we have to tackle the problem of guarding and feeding the prisoners, as well as the intrigues being sown),” she said.

Tan, through his lawyer, had filed a petition for his transfer to another jail because Tan fears for his life in the CPDRC.

The petition came following reports that Tan planned to escape and that he asked rebels to rescue him, through their leaders detained inside CPDRC. Some reports said Tan paid the rebels P5 million.

There were also insinuations that Tan is behind the alleged attempt on the life of his co-accused Hung Chin Chang or Simon Lao, whom the prosecution planned to use as a state witness.

In his petition, Tan said these reports are designed to mislead the public so they would believe he is a drug financier and that his life and security are already affected.

Still best place

“Lipay kaayo mi ana. Although we do not have any say on that, if that (Tan’s transfer to another jail) happens, that’s one less problem,” Garcia said.

In reaction to Tan’s petition, the prosecution believes the CPDRC is still the safest place for Tan because no jail can compare to the state-of-the-art facility.

In CPDRC, Tan is detained alone in a high-security cell, which has a surveillance camera.

His visitors are strictly screened and jail guards cannot talk to him.

His cell has an electronic lock and a padlock, and only the operations officer of CPDRC and Capitol security consultant Byron Garcia have the key. (MBG)
