Niño’s voyage, Oriental theme underline need to spread faith

The Cebuanos’ need to spread the Christian faith to neighboring countries in Asia is probably the reason this year’s Sinulog festivities have taken an Asian theme.

So said Msgr. Adelito Abella in his homily during the mass shortly after the arrival of the images of the Sto. Niño and Our Lady of Guadalupe in the St. Joseph National Shrine in Mandaue City around 9 a.m. yesterday.

Hundreds of residents and students, carrying flowers, flags and balloons, lined up along the streets leading to the church for the annual translacion.

As part of the Sinulog activities, the images of the Child Jesus and Mama Mary are transferred to the church in Mandaue, where they meet the image of St. Joseph, symbolic of the reunion of the Holy Family.

Residents waved their hands and shouted “Pit Seyor” as soon as the images of the Sto. Niño and the Virgin Mary passed by.

Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano and other city officials waited for the arrival of the images in front of the church.

Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama and Councilor Arsenio Pacaña formally turned over the images to them.

Councilors Wenceslao Gakit and Carlo Fortuna of Mandaue helped carry the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Abella asked the churchgoers about their faith and urged them to spread it to others.

“Did we nurture our faith or did we just keep our faith to ourselves?” Abella asked in Cebuano.

A vigil was held in honor of the Sto. Niño and the church was open the entire night for those who wanted to kiss and honor the images.

A mass was celebrated earlier today, giving Mandauehanons a chance to bid farewell to the images that will be brought back to Cebu City through a fluvial parade. (ROV)
