Big finish gives Celdran, Chiongbian Coral Tee win

Carl Almario and Jun Plana came out with the best performance after 36 holes, while the tandem of Jonji Chiongbian and Mike Celdran came out blazing in the final 18 holes as the two teams copped the top awards in the 25th Coral Tee Invitational Tournament at the Cebu Country Club yesterday.

Almario, one of the club’s leading players, and Plana combined for a tournament-best 137 gross points to win the title by six points over Ramontito Garcia and Richie Garcia.

Best net score

In the battle for the best net score, Chiongbian and Celdran had a monumental comeback in the windup to claim the championship.

Going into the final 18 holes way off the leaderboard, Chiongbian and Celdran churned in a tournament-best 82 points, more than enough to unseat the pacesetters.

Chiongbian and Celdran opened the tournament with 74 points, which was good for a tie at the 22nd to 24th spots. The big
final-round push boosted their overall tally to 156 points, seven strokes ahead of runners-up Jun Luna and Hospicio Razon, who likewise had a big final round.

Second best

Luna and Razon, who had 72 points in the first round, hiked their tally to a two-round 149 after securing 77 points in the final 18 holes.

The team of Michael Macky and Dino Yap and that of former Cebu City mayor Alvin Garcia and former senator Tito Sotto had the second-best scores in the final round with 79 points apiece.

Macky and Yap went on to secure the third place in a tie with Manuel Granada and Boboy Durano with a two-round score of 148 points each. (JCT)
