CebuFA holds verdict, tells players to give statements
The Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) deferred to next week its decision on the punishment of the players involved in the Thirsty Cup brawl to give the players a chance to air their side.
The CebuFA board met Thursday night at the Cebu Country Club, where it got the referees’ report and organizer’s report about the Thirsty Cup.
Last Sunday, in front of a sizeable crowd, the Hiroshi FC and Crazy Horse semifinal match turned ugly, ending in a free-for-all. Hiroshi’s Hubert Buot slapped Albert Nangkil of Crazy Horse in the back of his head, while Gary Panagsagan, of Crazy Horse, punched Ariel Cahilig, just before the fight erupted.
Some fans were also seen ganging up on the Crazy Horse team, which is now banned from the Thirsty Cup for life.
“It (referees’ report) mentioned that four players from Hiroshi and three from Crazy Horse were involved,” CebuFA president Jonathan Maximo said.
Maximo said that in the interest of due process, they will ask the players mentioned and the Crazy Horse and Hiroshi managers to submit their own versions of the incident.
Severely punishment
“We also want to listen to the players,” Maximo said.
Maximo said the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) code of discipline stipulates that “all cases of violence must be severely punished” and that the suggested 12 months suspension for getting involved in a free-for-all “must be considered as a minimum.”
Any player who will be banned will not be allowed to play anywhere else in the country as the sanctions will be forwarded to the PFF. ML
Expected to get the brunt of the penalty are Buot, for his unprovoked attack on Nangkil, and Panagsagan, who admitted the punch in a talk with Sun.Star.
