Cotta boots out Spring Oilers

Reigning national champion Ozamiz Cotta bucked from an 18-point deficit to eliminate Spring Cooking Oil from contention following a scary 79-78 win in the NBC pre-season tournament Mayor Sammy Co Open Invitational at the Pagadian City Gym.

Veteran banger Billy Bansil tallied the final six points for the Cotta, including the game-winning free throws in the final two seconds, as the Cotta joined opening-day winner and South conference rival Tribu Sugbu into the semifinal round.

First lead

The Cooking Oil Masters enjoyed an 18-point lead in the third period only to lose it in the final frame when Ozamiz started to tighten its guard and placed its offense on high gear.

Playmaker Bob Cozy Ilanga sank 10 of his 11 points to rally the Cotta to its first taste of the lead, 58-57.

Spring rallied back to regain the upper hand, 77-73, with less than two minutes left in the game until Bansil took charge to pull Ozamiz to victory.

In the other game, Pagadian Explorers survived despite being held without a point in the final 5:16 of the game for an equally nail-biting 75-74 win over the Valencia Golden Harvest.

Former Philippine Basketball Association player Bong Marata and Arian Daja sizzled hot at the start of the fourth quarter to build a 75-65 lead, overcoming a 12-point deficit early in the game.

The Golden Harvest staged a comeback behind Julius Navales, who put the Valencia City team just a point behind, 74-75, in the final 1:41 of the game.

However, the Golden Harvest could not finish the job as both teams traded blanks, including center Nat Cruz’s potential game-winning, under-goal stab in the closing seconds of the game.

Marata and Daja combined for 27 points, while former pros Peter Naron and Leo Bat-og added nine points apiece for Pagadian.
