Japan’s auto industry use infotech to maintain edge in world market

The development of Japan’s intelligent transport systems is opening up opportunities for information and communications technology (ICT) and other related firms aside from automotive manufacturers.

Intelligent transport systems use electronics and communications technologies to improve public convenience, reduce environmental costs and make driving safer.

According to Japan External Trade Organization, part of Japan’s strategies for continued market leadership in the automotive industry is standardizing the integration of the latest IT into new vehicles.

Strong potential

“Private development of IT technologies and major government investment in IT infrastructure combine to create a strong market potential,” Jetro said in a statement furnished to Sun.Star Cebu.

The Japanese automotive industry ranks second in the world, close behind that of the United States, with a total production of 10.5 million vehicles in 2004.

Advances in parts modularization also present opportunities for foreign manufacturers in the Japanese market.

Modularization refers to the integration of multiple parts to reduce part and assembly costs. It also aims to improve functionality by regarding multiple parts as integral systems during the design stage.

“Due to the importance of integrating various parts technologies properly, foreign parts manufacturers that expand to Japan are in a strong position to engage in modularization with Japanese manufacturers,” Jetro said.

Foreign companies entering the Japanese automotive market will find a strong domestic consumer base that purchase some six million vehicles each year.

Japanese automakers produced 4.96 million vehicles for export in 2004.

“Foreign companies in Japan not only benefit from strong domestic sales and exports but also the ability to leverage the global reach of Japanese automakers and parts manufacturers,” the agency said. (JBN)
