Costanilla: To sing
By Sam Costanilla
Spotlight

TEACHER. She is a teacher by profession, but the love for singing has inspired this lovely lass from Carcar to join a band and eventually record an album.

Joanne Cabigas is a full-time mentor at the ValenciaElementary School where she has been teaching for three years now. But her hectic schedule that includes lesson planning, which is a never-ending task, does not pose any obstacle to her first love. “It’s just a matter of effective time management,” Joanne told me.

KID. Even as a kid, Joanne already showed a lot of potential in the field of entertainment. In 1989, when she was still eight years old, she already started to hog the limelight by appearing as a contestant in Munting Mutya, a segment of the weekly television variety show Etcetera. In 1992, at 11 years, Joanne became a mainstay in That’s Entertainment Cebu edition. It lasted for two years. Those television appearances helped Joanne develop her singing skills and forget about stagefright.

COURSE. Joanne also told me that her parents actually forced her to take up education as a course. “My mindthen was set on information technology, but my parents compelled me to study education which I eventuallylearned to love,” she stressed.

DISBANDED. Joanne’s baptism of fire was to become a vocalist of the Transparent Band. Her three-year stintwith it further enhanced her performance before live audiences. But she was downhearted when the groupdisbanded with the decision of her former bandmates to go to China. She didn’t join them; Joanne continuedteaching in Carcar.

BAND. In 2003, Joanne joined another band named August Moon, a pop alternative band which was formed the year before. It was Emil de la Torre, who is into art metal crafting who invited Joanne to join August Moon, wherehe composes songs and plays the piano and bass. The lovely singer grabbed the invitation right away. Emilclaims that hers is just the perfect voice that would give justice to his original compositions.August Moon is also composed of Rico Demeterio on the keyboard, Jojo Fajardo on the drums and KerrylDemeterio on the guitar. Their music video is being played over Myx, Channel 46. Emil is also asking theteleviewers to text Mymyx space vote paalam and send it to 2366 in order to view their music video titledPaalam, Mahal na Mahal Kita. The same piece can also be heard over 103.5 Wild FM and 99.5 RT FM daily.

MUSICIAN. Emil as a musician started with the Walay Nagmahal Band which was, in his own words, acombo-lata. From 1983 to 2001, he joined A2Z which produced three albums under Octoarts, Dyna and Alpha. But that was history.

With the formation of August Moon in 2002, Emil was able to also hone his skill in writing songs. In fact, in the band’s first album, 10 tracks are his own compositions. Those who’d like toknow more about August Moon may visit its website at www.augustmoonph.com or send an e-mail to august_moon2k@yahoo.com.

TELESERIES. Remember Emmanuel “Direk Maning” Borlaza? He used to meg some of those black and whiteCebuano/Visayan movies in the early 70s, right?

I was told by Cebu Catholic Television Network presidentNonito Tatay Dodong Limchua that Maning is set to direct a teleseries titled Langit ug Yuta, based ona grand-prize Cebu Popular Music Festival entry. Shooting will start anytime this month, Tatay Dodongsaid. This is a welcome development and we hope other Cebuano/Visayan teleseries producers would followsuit. Tatay Dodong is open to negotiations regarding the production and airing of such flicks. (E-mail: samcost@yahoo.com or text 0906-9596888).
