Stage proves too hot for barefoot dancers
They got their feet burned but students of the Don Sergio Osmeña Memorial National High School did not mind the pain as long as they could offer their dance to the Sto. Niño yesterday.
Some of the school’s close to 80 dancers suffered first-degree burns on their soles after performing barefoot at the Cebu City Sports Center, around 2 p.m.
Tribu La-Gu-Booh’s turn to perform before the thousands of spectators came shortly after the drizzle stopped, which made the choreographer think the heat would not cause any harm.
“Mura gyug gi-plantsa akong tiil (It’s as though a flat iron was pressed on my feet),” said Niño Rolan, one of the dancers who had blisters on his soles.
“Pero sige lang, halad man to namo ni Sto. Niño (But that’s okay, it’s our offering to the Sto. Niño),” his friend added.
The students grimaced and tried to relieve the pain by jumping on the grass, as volunteers from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation rushed to pour cold water on their feet.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he would ask the organizers to look into the matter, especially since he already banned schools from the Sinulog contests.
“I didn’t expect it would be that hot because it was raining. I let them dance barefoot because it’s nicer to dance without shoes,” choreographer Angelo Manapsal told Sun.Star Cebu in Cebuano. (LCR)
