Godwin kiddie chess tilt today

Inaugural champion Felix Shaun Balbona leads today’s participants in the 2nd Godwin Kiddies Open Chess Tournament at the Bibo Chess Club on Jakosalem St., Cebu City.

Balbona, winner of the 1st Godwin Kiddies Open Chess Tournament last month, will have a tougher time defending his title this time as the organizers raised the age limit of the tournament.

While the previous event was for players aged 12 and below, today’s tournament is open to kiddie players aged 14 and under. This allows Balbona’s older sister, Jessa, another kiddie chess heavyweight, to participate.

Also expected to compete in the tournament, which will start at 10 a.m., is Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships kiddie division finalist Yves Fiel, another heavy favorite from Argao, Cebu.

The rest of the chess-playing Balbona siblings, John and Marq, and Lapu-Lapu kiddies champion Ralph Pedrosa will also vie in the five-round event.

The champion will receive P700, while the rest of the top five will receive P500, P300, P200 and P100. Registration fee is P40. Those who want to join may contact Ramsy Pedrosa at 420-6723 or tournament arbiter Marvin Ruelan at 412-1076.

The tournament is supported by Weng Gakit, Roy Perales, Frank Navares and the Shemberg Seaweeds division managers. (JCT)
