Digitized Now
By Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano

There is little doubt computers have had a big impact and have taken over our daily lives and work. That impact even made its way as an influential tool in art as well. Artists today are embracing the technology and are harnessing fully the computer’s potential in design and making art.

Using the computer in digital art production is a step further. One fine example of these artists who's leading the crop is the University of the Philippines educated painter Jethro Estimo who, in his post-school activities and profession, have given up the use of pigment and brush after turning into a digital artist.

His new direction affords multiplicity because it is the medium of the masses.

Such is where printing soared since woodblocks and Guttenberg. At his solo exhibit entitled Uga Daan at Gamayng gallery inside Turtle’s Nest along Gorordo avenue, he showed his artistic evolution by using the tarpaulin material.

He came up with art that is very pop in color schemes, animated in character, simulating real brushstrokes, primed canvas giving way to the outdoor billboard material. Uga Daan hints on the doing away with drying time for digital prints, compared to oil and other pigments. The first digital art he produced was for a group show at the now defunct Luna artspace. The piece was for the 9/21 exhibit commemorating martial rule with very explicit visual commentaries. His digital advocacy was followed with another work when he made a kind of product packaging suggestion at the show called Laraw sa Kagutom, organized by Pusod at CAP gallery. And the digital medium proved versatile in usage when he showed postcard designs for the Post U’r Future exhibit at U.P.’s Little Gallery. At present Jethro holds office at POW Designs, an outfit specializing in advertising and graphic creations.
