2 kids return phone of Tangub City mayor

Cebu City officials gave additional recognition to two schoolchildren yesterday, not for their excellence in dancing the Sinulog, but for their honesty.

Cousins PJ Lambo, 11, and Leo Johnson Lambo, seven, returned a cellular phone belonging to Tangub City Mayor Jennifer Wee-Tan.

Both are pupils at the Zapatera Elementary School.

Their schoolmates in the Pundok sa Kabataan sa Day-as Zapatera Elementary School won fifth place in the Sinulog-based category and were also awarded yesterday.

The cousins were gathering plastic items along the New Imus Road to sell when Leo found the cellular phone.

PJ told reporters that Leo was afraid to touch it, afraid he would get into trouble, but PJ picked it up and brought it home before someone else found it.

There, they decided to ask their aunt Mary Ann what to do with the phone.

Dropped

It was Mary Ann who contacted Mayor Tan’s husband.

Mayor Tan said her husband dropped the Nokia cell phone worth P12,000 somewhere in the parade route last Sunday.

Her husband then got a text message from the boys’ aunt yesterday, informing them they wanted to return the phone.

Tan said she was more worried about the information stored in the phone, rather than its value.

“Pasalamat gyud kaayo ko sa mga bata. Wala pa gyud nawala ang honest kid sa Sugbo (I’m so grateful to the two children. Cebu still has honest kids),” Tan said. “I’m so happy. Those kids are so honest,” she said.

Aside from the return of her cellular phone, Tan had other reasons to celebrate.

Tangub City’s Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe went home with P1 million after winning first prize in the Sinulog-based category and best in street dancing.

Champions

For his part, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña praised the two boys, saying they made Cebu shine.

“They are the grand champions of the Sinulog. Nakita na ang epekto sa Sto. Niño (The Sto. Niño’s influence is evident),” he said.

Mayor Tan pledged to give the boys and their aunt P5,000 for their honesty. (MEA)
