Police patrol car hits 2 sisters, 1 dies
Two speeding police cars responding to different alarms accidentally hit three minors, while responding policemen shot dead a man who attacked them.
At 6:20 p.m., Sunday, Crime Suppression Unit car 507 was on its way to respond to a trouble alarm when two sisters suddenly crossed V. Rama Ave. Merci Monterde dela Calzada, 15, died. Her five-year-old sister Mayla survived.
CSU Chief Arnel Banzon, in a report to the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said PO3 Leopoldo Sumalpong and SPO1 Serafin Asingjo were on their way to Peace Valley when the two girls crossed the street.
Sumalpong, who was driving, tried to apply the brakes, but it was too late.
They rushed the two girls to the Cebu City Medical Center. They were later transferred to the Chong Hua Hospital. Merci died at 9 p.m.
Expenses
The two immediately reported the incident to the Cebu City Traffic Division for investigation.
Banzon and CCPO director Melvin Gayotin said that since it was an accident and the two policemen were conducting official business, the City Government has agreed to shoulder the expenses.
Gayotin said the two sisters had just alighted from a jeepney and went in front of the passenger vehicle to cross the street. Because they were in front of the jeepney, policemen did not see them until it was too late.
In Barangay Dakit, Bogo, 10-year-old Gaudioso Canama had just stepped out of a tricycle and was about to cross the street when the Bogo Police car hit him.
Juanito Sintos, a municipal employee, was driving the police car to bring a team of policemen to conduct a checkpoint in the barangay.
Canama suffered injuries in different parts of his body and was brought to the Severo Verallo Memorial Hospital. He is out of harm’s way.
In Toledo City, PO2 Bombino Enriquez said he was forced to shoot Rosalito Pilapil, who allegedly tried to grab his rifle.
Residents of Barangay Poblacion complained that Pilapil was armed with a knife and ran amok. Barangay tanod Manolito Dejarme called the police.
No choice
When the police team arrived, Pilapil entered a barbershop and stayed there for about an hour.
Suddenly, he came out and allegedly grabbed Enriquez’s Armalite, leaving him no choice but to fire.
Enriquez hit Pilapil’s right calf and they rushed him to the Toledo City District Hospital.
However, he died along the way, reportedly due to loss of blood.
Police have yet to hear from Pilapil’s relatives if they want to file a case against them. (MEA)
