Thieves rake in P240T in Sinulog weekend

Thieves made money during the Sinulog celebrations, taking away over P240,000 in cash and valuables, mostly cellular phones, from at least 21 victims over the weekend.

The Fuente Osmeña Police Station received 15 reports of petty crimes –theft, tiempo, laglag-barya, pickpocketing and burglary–while the Waterfront Police Station recorded six cases.

The victims included four foreign nationals and three out-of-towners.

At 12:30 p.m., Sunday, Kazutaka Shimizu, 59, a Japanese national employed at the Tsuneishi Shipyard in Balamban, Cebu fell victim to a laglag-barya operation while taking lunch inside a fast food outlet at the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda.

The thief took Shimizu’s black bag containing P25,000, his passport and other important documents.

Camera

Peter Ric Mareson, 39, an Australian national who stayed at Metro Park n La Guardia, Lahug, reported to the Waterfront Police Station that somebody stole his Nikon camera worth P21,000 while he was at the Basilica del Sto. Niño to hear mass.

Chao Kuang Nuei, 21, a Taiwanese national and student in an international school in Lapu-Lapu City, lost his wallet containing P2,000, US$50 and some important documents.

Nuei reported the incident to the Fuente Police. He said the incident occurred at 11:45 a.m., Sunday while he and his teacher were watching the Sinulog grand parade along Gen. Maxilom Ave.

A pickpocket also victimized Ove Sverson, 34, a Swedish national residing in Maasin, Southern Leyte but temporarily staying in Lapu-Lapu City.

He lost his wallet containing P1,300 cash, six boat tickets for Maasin at P314 each, cards and important documents.

Local tourists

The incident occurred at noon while he and his friends were watching the Sinulog parade along Osmeña Blvd. near Robinson’s Department Store.

Local tourists were not spared. Out-of-towners Arturo Berondial of Malate, Metro Manila, Louie Gumba, 27, of Tacloban City, Catherine Necesio, 25, of Ipil, Zamboanga were victimized.

Berondial’s wallet was stolen when he was about to cross the street at the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda at 3:45 p.m., Sunday.

Gumba was watching the Sinulog grand parade in front of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 when an unidentified man took his Motorola cellular phone worth P25,000.

Berondial’s wallet contained P4,000 cash and other important documents.

Necesio, on the other hand, lost her P18,500 worth of jewelry when thieves burglarized her home. (JST)
