Bata wins $10,000 in US tourney
Five months removed from surgery to correct his eyesight, Efren Reyes is showing the pool world that there is more to him, as the biggest hustler in pool – with the sheepish grin and “I got lucky quotes” took the Derby City Classic One Pocket, earning $10,000 in the process.
However, the Magician, last year’s biggest earner with $279,000, fell short in pocketing the Master of the Table title and the extra $25,000 that goes with it after finishing third in the 9-ball event, won by Ralph Soquet.
The Derby City Classic Tourneys, considered one of the three major pool tournaments along with the US Open and World Pool championships, features a series of tournaments in One Pocket, Banks and 3-cushion event.
Last year, Reyes, who has been complaining about his poor eyes for years, won $45,000 in the Derby City tournaments, en route to topping the money list for the third time in four years.
In the final day, Reyes, the 1999 World Pool Champion, needed to win the 9-ball event to take the Master of the Table bonus, but failed after losing to Johnny Archer and Rodolfo Luat in the final four.
Meanwhile, another former world pool champion, Alex Pagulayan is having a great start this year after taking the one of the two spots in the first qualifier event of the international pool tournament. The other spot was taken by Johnny Miller, who took the Master of the Table title in Derby.
Pagulayan defeated Vilmos Foldes in the final day, 10-2. (ML)
