Sultan TKOs Yarte

Dondon Sultan kept his Philippine welterweight belt following a technical knockout win in the seventh round over Cesar Yarte in the main event of the Sinulog Slambang boxing promotions of Sammy Gello-ani and Stein Global Sports and Entertainment last Sunday at the Gaisano Country Mall car park.

The victory proved Sultan’s dominance over Yarte, whom he beat for the same title in November 2002 in Surigao City.

It was a bloody fight that left Yarte with a bad gash above his left eye before suffering a series of knockdowns.

“I told you I would win despite a short preparation,” said after the fight.

Yarte became Sultan’s human punching bag all throughout the fight as the Rex “Wakee” Salud fighter suffered three knockdowns – one in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds.

A right overhand opened the cut on Yarte’s left eye and it bled all throughout. However, that cut was not the reason for the stoppage as ring physician Dr. Jose Unabia, who had checked the three times, allowed Yarte to continue.

The victory improved Sultan’s record to 21-6-2 with seven knockout wins, while Yarte dropped to 7-9-1. RCM

Meanwhile, former RP flyweight king Federico Catubay annexed the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation 112-pound division title following a unanimous decision win over Louie Bantigue.

Catubay looked sharp from the start, hitting Bantigue with powerful wallops that floored the former amateur standout in the second, fourth and sixth rounds en route to winning the contest via unanimous decision.

The victory gave Catubay his 17th win against 10 losses and three draws. Bantigue suffered his third defeat in 17 fights.

In the undercard, all five ALA Boys beat their separate opponents with the comebacking Sherwin Paro making his first ring appearance since losing by unanimous decision to Pramuansak Posuwan for the WBO Asia Pacific superflyweight title on Oct. 28, 2004.

Paro showed no rust as he kept War Bartiquil in the distance with precise jabs and straight combinations to pull a unanimous decision win after six rounds.

Donnie “Ahas” Nietes also scored unanimous decision dominating journeyman Noel Veronque for six rounds and Robert Allanic scored two knockdowns for a unanimous decision win over Nonoy Deveilleres. The scoring were 59-52 all in favor for Nietes.

Upcoming sensations Rey Caitom and AJ Banal punctuated ALA Boys wins with masterful TKO wins against their respective opponents.

Banal scored a TKO win over Rodel Veronque in the fifth round, while Caitom survived a cut on his right eye against the elusive JR Llanasa before earning a TKO win in 1:15 of the second round.

Meanwhile, SGG Stable boxers also had their share of the limelight as Pedro Malco had knockout win over Ricky Escaner at 2:48 of the second round. Noel Sungahid also scored a knockout over Jun Mala at the 1:11 mark of the second round and Rogen Flores capped the with night with a TKO win over JR Baclayo at the 2:09 mark of the second round in his professional debut.

Flores, a former member of the formidable Cebu City boxing team in the late ’90s was best remembered for beating Olympian Roel Velasco during the National Open Amateur Championship held in Kidapawan City in 2000. (/b>
