2-year ban on 2 players

For their part in the ugly free-for-all in the Thirsty Cup last Jan. 8, two players have received the heftiest of sanctions – a two-year ban.

The Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) disciplinary board met last night at the Cebu Country Club to decide on the fate of the players involved in the brawl, and came up with a two-year ban each on Ariel Cahilig and Vermonel Resuena of Hiroshi FC.

Details of the meeting were still unavailable at press time last night, but Sun.Star Cebu learned from an insider that Cahilig and Resuena got the stiffest penalty.

“It was their second offense,” the source said.

Country-wide

Last Feb. 7, 2005, Cahilig and Resuena, along with Alex Boanghug, Glen Rodena of Hiroshi and James Paradillo and Oliver and Ranulfo Colina of Exas Philippines, were meted a tournament-long ban each by the CebuFA for their involvement in a free-for-all between Hiroshi FC and Exas Philippines.

As the governing body of football in Cebu and member of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), the players’ suspension will be in effect in all other tournaments in the country sanctioned by the PFF.

Aside from the suspension, Hiroshi FC will also be made to pay a fine.

“Sanctions imposed on the players and teams were tough. I hope this can be a lesson to all. We are doing this for the good of Cebu football,” the source also said.

The source also said that other players involved in the brawl will get a one-year suspension each, though he didn’t say the punishment on Hiroshi’s Harold Buot.

Buot, son of Hiroshi coach Eddie, who also sits in the CebuFA board, slapped Albert Nangkil at the back of his head.

One of the players involved in the brawl was Crazy Horse’s Gary Panagsagan, who admitted to Sun.Star of hitting Cahilig. (ML)
