READING PROGRAM
Meanwhile, students of several Cebu public schools will now enjoy Reader’s Digest, an international literary magazine, as part of their integrated English Reading Program thanks to the cooperation of the local government, the Department of Education (DepEd), and the Reader’s Digest publication company.
Starting this month, pilot schools will benefit from a three-month-subscription of the literary magazine as a new approach of teaching the English language. In this English reading program, students are encouraged to read, understand, and discuss the magazine’s featured articles in class while their teachers integrate the stories with Reader’s Digest-prepared worksheets and lesson plans. The program aims to cultivate reading as a habit in students to improve their common knowledge and grasp of the English language.
The Reader’s Digest magazine will serve as an alternate resource material for English Literature-related subjects. It features a balanced range of contemporary feature topics from inspiring real life stories and first-person narratives, to medical and scientific updates and humor. These articles can be easily read because they are written in simple and conversational English. A regular vocabulary section, Word Power, will also be utilized to help expand any reader’s vocabulary.
This program is part of the local government’s vision to improve education, raise English proficiency, and boost job readiness among the youth of Cebu.
Competence in English is said to strengthen over-all knowledge and self-confidence, and the government claims that providing for similar training materials and programs is a primary concern.
Reader’s Digest is exclusively distributed by A-Z Direct Marketing, Incorporated which has a branch office at Unit 2 Eltern Building, 318 Sikatuna St., Cebu City.
It can also be reached through the following telephone numbers: 2552273, 2538217 or 2552270.
