Capitol to put up child care center for working moms

Working mothers at the Capitol will soon have fewer worries about where to leave their toddlers.

The Cebu Provincial Government will put up a “child minding center” to serve its employees, including mothers who just gave birth, and to promote breastfeeding, said Provincial Board Member Agnes Magpale.

Children whom their parents bring inside offices often distract work, and they tinker with office equipment such as computers.

Data

Magpale, chairman of the PB committee on women, children and family, already finished drafting the implementing rules for the Children’s Code.

However, the lack of data on the children is delaying their move to formulate a “children’s plan” for this year.

Funds for the children’s center at the Capitol were already included in last year’s budget.

The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) with its chief, Marivic Garces, is still making the plans final.

Attention

The facility will be put up in the office that the PSWO vacated, said Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, who expressed fondness for children.

“I know how it feels to be a child, to be treated as insignificant. Give them attention and you give them self worth,” said Garcia.

The center will have tables and chairs and other child-friendly materials, said Magpale. There will be no teacher, though, as this will not be a school but mainly a place where someone can look over the children.

The Province will not have to hire another worker for the project, said Magpale, as the plan is just to deploy existing workers on an alternate basis.

“The center will be free. It will be a service for the parents,” said Magpale. (JPM)
