Seares: Coddling frat punks
By Pachico A. Seares
News Sense

It boggles the mind: Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña's coddling of some wayward members of warring fraternities Alpha Kappa Rho (Akhro) and Tau Gamma Phi who, next to serial summary killers, top the list of disturbers of community peace.

These Akhro and Tau members cannot be in the same room or street without violence erupting.

No exaggeration. If fists don't fly, knives don't slash nor guns bark, if blood doesn't flow, it's police mediation or "cooler heads"
working.

Cops call the brats undesirables, a nuisance---and worse names if the mayor is not within earshot.

Mayor Osmeña, however, pins hopes on them, many of whom are not students but "istambays" and dropouts.

Not a scolding

Nothing wrong with those who quit school for one reason or another. Nothing wrong with not abandoning hope for delinquents.

But for the mayor to tolerate frat members' misbehavior without bullying confounds many of us who are used to seeing him explode on much weaker fuse.

No threat that goes with bodyspeak and voice tone, Tomas style: "Behave or else." Not even some benign scolding from the city's father.

It's a contradiction: how the mayor can give too much leash to punks who break the law with mayhem and homicide, when he is easily pissed off by bloodless petty crimes.

But then Tomas lugs a sackful of contradictions, which is why media spend on him loads of newsprint and airtime.
