PSC’s P28M budget an insult, says Monico

Bacolod City Rep. Monico Puentevalla yesterday said that the P28 million allocated by the Senate Committee on Finance was a big insult to the victorious host team Philippines, the overall champion in the recent 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag).

“It’s really a big insult to the country’s athletes, who sacrificed hard just to win the overall title of the SEA Games,” said Puentevella.

Puentevella, also the Philippine Weightlifting Association president, said that they will not stop until the bicameral committee’s final deliberation to have the PSC budget for 2006 increased to P250 million.

“There is still hope and we will do everything for the good of sports in the country,” Puentevella said.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William “Butch” Ramirez said it’s going to be an austere preparations for the coming 15th Asian Games unless the bicameral committee, which will finalize the national budget for 2006, changes its mind.

“It’s really very small,” said Ramirez.

The Senate Committee on Finance, headed by Sen. Manny Villar, Tuesday denied the PSC’s request to increase the allocation to P250 million. Instead, it cited other sources of income to sustain the training of the athletes.

Villar’s committee, however, increased by P1 million the original allocation of P27 million set by the Department of Budget and Management late last year.

Ramirez said he remains hopeful the PSC budget will be increased as soon as the bicameral committee makes the final approval with the endorsement of the 120 congressmen, led by House Committee on Appropriation chairman Rep. Rolando Andaya.
