Red Bull sweeps quarterfinal series against Alaska

Red Bull barged into the semifinals series with a bang yesterday after the Barakos swept the Alaska Aces in their best-of-five quarterfinals series after an 81-65 Game 3 victory in the San Mig Coffee PBA Fiesta Conference at the Cuneta Astrodome.

In the other quarterfinal series, Air21 Express moved ahead of Talk ’N Text following a 98-93 win in Game 3.

Air21 is now one win away of wrapping up the series with a 2-1 lead.

The series-clinching victory of Red Bull mentor Yeng Guiao’s wards propelled them into the best-of-seven semifinals series versus early qualifier Barangay Ginebra Kings.

“Hindi talaga naming ito inisip (We didn’t imagine this),” said Guiao after the game. “We didn’t really think we could sweep them in this series.”

Red Bull, which is on a three-game win roll since the arrival of James Penny, who took over from Quemont Greer as the Barakos’ reinforcement, were only suppressed in the early goings of the game.

They took over starting in the middle of the second period and there was no stopping them all the way to the final buzzer.

“It’s going to be different this time around with Penny now playing for us and Ginebra having their own new import,” said Guiao of the series against Ginebra, which beat Red Bull earlier in this conference.

Penny once again did a marvelous all-around job for the Barakos, although it was Lordy Tugade who was adjudged Best Player of the Game due to Tugade’s excellent offensive performance.

Tugade netted 24 points on a 7-of-12 field-goal shooting and grabbed eight caroms.

But it was Penny who made a difference in this series as the 29-year-old logged an average of more than 20 points in the three games that he played with red Bull. (JSV)
