Doggie bags aplenty By Zac Faelnar-Camara
No one should ever be embarrassed to take home doggie bags but in case you sometimes are, I can give you one stupendous reason for taking your turn to generously give them away – 2006 is the Year of the Dog!
The Chinese New Year is based on the Lunar Calendar that has been in use for centuries.
To the rest of the world, we identify each Chinese year with an animal name. The Year of the Dog will begin on the 29th of January.
Although I have no traceable Chinese lineage, I do respect a number of beliefs that have amalgamated into neo-Filipino culture. As gift-giving to bring luck is somewhat of a thing we are always prepared to do, there are a hundred and one items you can bring home in bags aplenty for you, your friends and family.
Anything under the sun, that can be printed or painted on, has the potential to be a great idea. So to your heart’s delight, look out for dog prints! For personal use, you’re sure to come across great finds like fine stationery and note pads, 100% cotton tee shirts, canvass bags, ceramic mugs and even mouse pads. For the home, there are breakfast plates, serving platters, blankets, pillow covers, cuddly stuffed toys and decorative ceramic and resin dogs.
Nothing beats the real friskies, though. And bringing home a pup would be the warmest thing of all! Naturally, you can’t buy out the pet shops for presents but you can shop around for beautifully illustrated or photographed books for the dog-lovers and would-be owners.
Still, you can certainly give your loyalty and sincere friendship by the bagful to as many as you can this year, just as dogs are well known to be.
Take it from me. This is my year!
