Prove your allegations, Tom dares Nalzaro

Instead of criticizing him more and calling him “onion-skinned,” broadcaster and Sun.Star Cebu columnist Bobby Nalzaro should just prove his allegations, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said.

Osmeña lashed out at Nalzaro anew during his conference yesterday in reaction to the columnist’s statement that he is onion-skinned.

“He’s the one who’s onion-skinned. Why is he so upset? I’m only suing him for P10; I’m not even seeking criminal charges.

Now he calls me onion-skinned, that’s how Bobby Nalzaro is. He wants to accuse somebody at his own choosing,” the mayor said.

Protection

Although libel is a criminal case, the mayor said he is not interested in the criminal charges. He is seeking only P10 in damages to make it easy for Nalzaro to respond, he said.

“I’m not interested in any criminal liability. I’m not interested in putting him in jail unless he lies in court. I’m only seeking protection from the court to get Bobby Nalzaro to show proof for his allegations,” the mayor added.

Osmeña’s most recent tirade against the columnist stemmed from Nalzaro’s commentary last week, where the latter raised the possibility that former Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Jonathan Guardo could be cheated if he runs in the 2007 elections.

Nalzaro also said that the mayor’s political allies include corrupt officials of the Commission of Elections.

Be careful

In his column published in yesterday’s issue of Sun.Star Cebu, Nalzaro said the mayor is being onion-skinned when he announced to the media that he will sue for libel.

The mayor said that as one of the senior members of the media and supposedly one of the best in the industry, Nalzaro should be careful in evaluating what he tells the public in his radio programs and newspaper columns.

“But in his commentaries, he’s very ambiguous in his accusations. He’s just really trying to smear my reputation, which I also want to protect,” he said. (LCR)
