Ingrid Sala receives a doctorate in music
For her contribution to the field of music education, Ingrid Sala Santamaria will be conferred a Doctorate of Music, Honoris Causa, by the De La Salle University in appropriate ceremonies at the Philippine International Convention Center this Saturday, Jan. 28.
Ingrid Sala Santamaria’s musical career as a concert pianist (first performer at the Concert at the Park, piano soloist with the PPO playing the Yellow River Concerto in Beijing) was placed on hold when in the early 1990’s, the Sala siblings honored their late parents by forming a foundation in their name- the Salvador and Pilar Sala Foundation.
With Ingrid at the helm, their first objective was to form a philharmonic orchestra for the second city of the Philippines, Cebu.
The foundation embarked on a Cebu Youth Symphony Orchestra 10-year development program, recruiting young musicians from the countryside, offering them scholarships with instructors and training from musicians from Manila. In a couple of years the CYSO matured to become the Peace Philharmonic of the Philippines (PPP), based in Cebu.
Today, majority of the playing members of the PPP are teaching instrumental and music to budding musicians—creating a palpable role in providing qualified musicians and cultural leaders in the community and region.
Ingrid Sala Santamaria oversees the PPP Chamber Orchestra today from the sidelines and has focused on her passion—playing on the concert stage.
The past four years was punctuated by an odyssey of bringing concert music to the countryside, notching over 120 performances in Ilocos Sur, Luzon provinces down to Bicol, Visayas, and Iligan in Mindanao.
