Essay, poetry writing contests on Filipino migration

IN commemoration of the centennial migration of Filipinos to Hawaii, the Department of Tourism supports the “100 years of Filipino Migration to Hawaii Literary Competition.” This contest was launched by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas together with the National Commission for Culture and Arts.

This contest is open to all Filipinos of all ages. Entries must depict the theme, “100 years: The Filipino Legacy in Hawaii”. The contest is divided into three categories: poetry writing, essay writing and One-Act Play writing. Entries can either be written in English and Filipino. There are no limitations in the number of entries thus multiple entries are encouraged.

Criteria for each category are as follows:

Poetry Writing:

- An entry must consist of a collection of at least five but not more than 10 poems
- Entries must carry on original title
- Entries shall either be rhymed or in free verse
- There are no restrictions in the number of lines and words used

Essay Writing:

- An entry must be between 2,000 and 3,000 words in length, excluding footnotes, endnotes and bibliography
- Entries must carry an original title
- Entries must not be in any form of fiction, poetry, drama or review or summary of existing literature about the topic.

One Act Play Writing:

- The length of an entry must translate to 30 to 45 minutes in actual performance
- Entries must carry an original title
- Entries may either be based on real or fictional characters or events
- Entries must be accompanied by a one-page synopsis and list of the cast of characters

Interested participants can download an official entry form from the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) and National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) websites, at www.cfo.gov.ph and www.neea.gov.ph. Entries can then be submitted personall or via email at

Deadline for submission of entries is on February 28. Entries sent by mail should be postmarked not later than the deadline.
