2 Lorega brothers gunned down
By Allan I. Varquez
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

TWO brothers died and a 10-year-old boy was wounded in a vigilante-style shooting inside a house in Barangay Lorega-San Miguel, Cebu City last night.

Both shot in the head, brothers Rodrigo and Roderick Legaspi had no criminal record, but police believe that the assailants were after Rodrigo because of his alleged involvement in the drug trade.

Roderick, 29, was shot because he tried to help his brother. The boy, Roderick’s son, was hit in the wrist while hiding with Rodrigo in a room.

SPO1 Jay Yballe of the Homicide Section said the two can be included in the list of victims in vigilante-style attacks, which the Cebu Archdiocese and different sectors have criticized as “senseless, unmotivated and deplorable.”

The Legaspi brothers are the 116th victims since the attacks started on Dec. 22, 2004.

The gunman was on a maroon C-100 Honda motorcycle driven by another person, but witnesses could not identify them because they covered their faces with handkerchiefs and wore helmets.

Yballe said that shortly before 7 last night, Rodrigo, 31, was walking on the main barangay road and about to turn right in an alley going to his house some 20 meters away, when a motorcycle stopped near him.

Sensing danger, Rodrigo ran but the gunman got off the motorcycle and followed him.

Rodrigo reached his house and asked his brother to close the door. Roderick was in the doorway and was about to close the door when the gunman shot him twice in the head.

As he fell, the culprit went straight to the room on the ground floor where Rodrigo hid together with Roderick’s son. Inside the room, the gunman shot Rodrigo in the head. The boy (name withheld, being a minor) got hit in the right wrist.

Both Rodrigo and Roderick died instantly, while the boy was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center. (AIV)
