Boy, 15, stabs widow, 75, in Toledo heist

A WIDOWED businesswoman was stabbed by a 15-year-old boy who robbed her inside her store in Barangay Don Andres Soriano (Das), Toledo City Saturday night.

Priscilla Reyes, 75, was alone in her coco lumber store when Walter (real name withheld) entered and stabbed her in the back with a 12-inch bolo locally called plamingko.

Reyes was declared dead on arrival at the district hospital.

Walter was arrested yesterday morning in Barangay Media Once, about four kilometers away from Barangay Das.

According to SPO2 Castro Entoma, case investigator of the Das Police Sub-station under the Toledo City Police Station, Walter claimed he was only after the money.

No one could determine the amount taken. Police recovered Reyes’ money pouch in Walter’s house, but there was no cash inside.

Das parish priest Mike Hisoler warns his parishioners, especially the elderly who live on their own, to be careful at all times.

He also urged the community to be vigilant against those who take advantage of the elderly.

Stunned

Residents in Barangay Das were shocked by the assault. When they learned of Walter’s arrest, they trooped to the substation, spilling out into the barangay plaza.

Walter, an orphan, regularly delivered coconut lumber to Reyes’ store together with his uncles for about six months now and was familiar with Reyes.

At 9 p.m., Reyes was still inside the shop when Walter entered.

Nobody saw the incident, but Reyes’ helper saw him through the glass window trying to escape through the back door of the store.

The helper said Reyes usually kept her money in a small pouch that she wore around her neck.

Reyes’ children, who lived nearby, could not say how much was taken from their mother.

Police went to Walter’s house at 10 a.m. yesterday and arrested him.

He admitted needing the money to get by. He had even wanted to steal the telephone and had already cut off the line when he panicked and fled.

Reyes lived with a helper in a house beside the store, across the church in Barangay Das.

Walter was taken to the Toledo City Police Station and will face a robbery with homicide case. (MEA/With RHM)
