Council prods brys. to revive clean-up drive

A CEBU City councilor is reminding barangays to ensure tidiness of surroundings by reviving the campaign on cleaning one’s backyard.

Among others, he cited clogged drainage that resulted in stinking wastewater flowing onto the streets.

Councilor Edgardo Labella said he received complaints that maintenance of the City’s drainage “leaves much to be desired.”

He specifically mentioned Manalili St. and Osmeña Blvd. that need immediate attention since wastewater is already flowing on the street and sidewalks.

Pedestrians are often forced to trudge on the road, endangering themselves, just to avoid the already smelly sidewalk.

Aside from its foul smell, wastewater also “threatens the sanitary ambience of restaurants, eateries, and other food-based establishments” along thoroughfares.

He blamed the indiscriminate throwing of garbage that blocks the drainage system.

“Clogged drainage impedes the flow of wastewater, forcing the same to flow back into the open streets especially in the lowland areas of this city,” he said in a proposed resolution.

The problem, though, could be readily solved if the residents involve themselves in proper collection and disposal of garbage and in cleaning the surroundings.

Hence, he proposed that the barangays, especially in the downtown area, “rev up” the campaign “Atong Tugkaran, Atong Limpyohan” of the City government.

Association of Barangay Councils president Eugenio Faelnar, in an interview, said barangay officials were already told to support the campaign.

In fact, he said, in Guadalupe, where he is the barangay captain, they conduct weekly pulong-pulongs or meetings where garbage problem is one of the concerns usually tackled.

He reminded the barangay officials to encourage and keep his personnel’s moral in sustaining the campaign by talking to them from time to time. (RHM)
