Alumni to build bust of M. Fernan
The Abellana Alumni Association (AAA) will build a bust of one of Abellana National School’s outstanding alumni, the late Chief Justice Marcelo Fernan.
AAA president Antonio Tompar, who is also the president of Mactan Rock Industries Inc., bared the plan last Saturday during the celebration of the school’s 100th founding anniversary.
“This is in recognition (of) his valuable contribution to the achievement of the goals of nation building, of his tireless efforts and profound dedication to public service that greatly benefited the people,” Tompar said in a statement.
Pride
He pointed out that Fernan, who had attained the fourth and third highest position in the country—as Chief Justice and Senate president, respectively—had given so much pride to the school.
During Abellana National School’s centennial celebration at City Sports Club, Tompar encouraged other alumni to “emulate” the doings of Fernan and other alumni “worthy of recognition.”
Abellana National School, formerly Cebu Provincial High School, was established in Cebu City in 1906, offering a purely academic curriculum until the outbreak of World War II.
In 1945, the school was transferred to Argao, which prompted the City of Cebu to establish the Cebu City High School, which was later renamed Abellana National School in honor of the late Cebu governor Hilario Abellana.
Abellana was killed by the Japanese during their occupation in Cebu.
Abellana National School operates on the guiding principles of producing quality high school graduates, promoting self-reliance and productivity among the staff, establishment of harmonious relations and service to the community. (JBN)
