Pacquiao to sing during Charter Day

The way things are going Manny Pacquiao may turn out the main attraction during the Cebu City Charter Day celebration on Feb. 24.

Pacquiao yesterday accepted Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s invitation to attend the affair, which will also have President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and former chief justice Hilario Davide as guests of honor.

However, it wasn’t an easy decision for Pacquiao to accept the invitation as his hometown will also hold a weeklong celebration for its founding anniversary.

Pacquiao said Gen. Santos City will celebrating it founding anniversary on Feb. 23-25.

Sacrifice

However, the boxing icon promised to skip a day of the Gen. Santos celebration to be in Cebu on Feb. 24.

“This only shows how Manny loves Cebu,” said his close friend Cebuano boxing promoter Rex “Wakee” Salud. “He even has to sacrifice part of his busy schedule just to be here.”

Salud said Pacquiao also has an invitation from the president’s son, Mikey, to attend another event in Baguio on the same dates, which Pacquiao had to decline.

Pacquiao was game yesterday, signing autographs during his visit to the City Hall and the Capitol, where he met Gov. Gwen Garcia and other provincial officials.

At the City Hall, Osmeña eagerly listened to one of the songs in Pacquiao’s new album, “Para Sa Iyo Ang Laban Na To” on a CD player. Osmeña then invited Pacquiao to sing the song during the Charter Day celebration, which Pacquiao readily accepted.

At the Capitol, Garcia and provincial officials listened to the song played on a cellular phone. (JCT/RCM)
