Z, Czar win vegas bouts
Z Gorres and Czar Amonsot won their respective fights over Mexican opponents in style yesterday in Las Vegas.
Gorres rendered Jose Alfredo Tirado helpless in 10 rounds to score a unanimous decision win in his second US fight, while Amonsot took Cristian Favela to school following another lopsided decision win in their eight-round encounter.
Gorres, who is scheduled to fight for the OPBF super-flyweight title on March 18 against Waengpetch Chuwatana in Mandaue City, used his counterpunching when Tirado tried to go for his body, utilizing his jabs and straights to keep the Mexican fighter at bay.
Bill Graham saw the fight 98-91, Dave Moretti had it 99-90 and Duane Ford scored it 98-91 for Gorres.
Deduction
Referee Jay Nady deducted a point from Tirado’s scorecard for excessive holding in the seventh round.
The win improved Gorres’ record to 22-1-1 with 12 KO wins, while Tirado, who hails from Culiacan, Mexico, fell to 24-9 with 19 KOs.
Fighting in the lightweight division did not slow down Amonsot in his US debut.
Favela, who came as late replacement for Antonio Wong, tried to give the 20-year-old Tagbilaran City native a tough fight, using his vast ring experience, but it was the youthful Amonsot who gave him punching lessons, leading to one of the worst defeats of the Mexican.
Amonsot improved to 14-1-1 with 10 KOs, while Favela dropped to 11-10-4, eight KOs.
Mexican rivals
Gorres and Amonsot’s wins again showcased the Filipinos’ dominance over their Mexican rivals in less than a month.
Sibulan, Negros Oriental-native Jimrex Jaca, who is managed by Cebuano Rex “Wakee” Salud, scored a first round knockout over Mexican Geronimo Hernandez lat Jan. 22 also in Las Vegas.
Jaca’s win preceded Manny Pacquiao’s 10th round conquest over Mexican legend Erik Morales in the main event.
Rodel Mayol also scored a fourth-round knockout over Lorenzo Trejo in Mexico last Jan. 28 in an eliminator bout for the WBC minimum-weight title. (RCM)
