Costanilla: Raki Love By Sam Costanilla Spot light
CONCERT. The city’s streetchildren stand to benefit in a post-Valentine concert that Ultimate Born Diva Raki Vega will stage on Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. at SM City Cinema 2. According to Raki, the forthcoming show is her simple contribution to the cause of helping alleviate the plight of the city’s streetchildren. “These kids occupy a special spot in my heart and we should find ways to help them and their parents cope up with all sorts of hindrances in order to survive,” the diva declared. Raki also told me that for her show, Raki Vega Celebrates Love, she has lined up a wonderful repertoire that is sure to delight the audience, kids and adults alike. This is one thing that is so commendable on the part of Raki. Her being a national singing champion has not gotten into her head, unlike other performers we know. Raki is still the same humble lady: Ever polite, always courteous.

HELP. It is in this light that yours truly is inviting you to watch Raki Vega Celebrates Love on the 17th. Be truly entertained—and give yourself a chance to help uplift the plight of our streetchildren. Your watching the concert is your own way of helping them. Raki has promised to give her all in this upcoming presentation, so if you fail to come, don’t blame me if after the show, those who watch it would tell you that you have missed one-half of your life. I’m not exaggerating—I’m just warning you. NGenius IT Hub, Asian Learning Center and Asian Academy of Music, where Raki used to teach voice, are joining forces in producing the Feb. 17 show. Tickets are reasonably priced at P800, P500 and P300. For ticket reservations and purchases, call 412-4512 or 254-9686 while there are still some pieces left.

MADRIDEJOS. Tita Nards of the Madridejos tourism office is inviting the public to a two-hour dinner date inside the historic Kota Park, which will be transformed into a romantic setting on Feb. 14. During the dinner date, there will be serenaders prior to a disco dancing by the beach. It’s so affordable—only P150 per head. Mayor Lety Mancio, Vice Mayor Virgilio Atienza and the rest of the town leaders should be commended for coming up with an activity such as this designed to promote local tourism and cultural development. Kota Park is one of Cebu’s top tourist destinations. For ticket reservations to the dinner date, call or text Tita Nards’ cellphone at 0920-7805981.

POPFEST. Due to insistent public demand, the 2006 Cebu Popular Music Festival will definitely be restaged on Feb. 18 starting 8 p.m. at the Talisay City Hall grounds. The restaging, sans the contest aspect, is open to the general public. All original interpreters of the 12 compositions will perform their respective songs. Of course, everybody’s darling Grant Dosdos, the festival’s best interpreter, will be singing his winning piece Tatay, Pauli Na, a Dennis Gregory Sugarol-Gween Cresencio collaboration. As usual, yours truly and Lou Dayoc will host the restaging. Come to the open-air musical treat and enjoy an evening of beautiful Cebuano songs under the stars over the Talisay sky.

BAND. If there’s a local band that deserves a standing ovation for its role in uplifting the Cebuano music industry, it is August Moon. The band is composed of vocalist Joanne Cabigas, lady guitarist JK Capuras and pianist Emil de la Torre who is also its composer and band leader. August Moon has come up with an album of nine songs that include Pinangga Ko, a Cebuano composition. The songs have been meticulously written and finely arranged and produced in order to emphasize the point that Cebuano music-makers can do wonders. Emil told me this album is a refreshing treat of acoustic numbers. “This album will soon be available in local record bars so be sure to grab copies as soon as these are on display,” Emil intoned. By the way, August Moon’s music video continues to play over MYX Channel 46. To view it, simply text mymyx space vote paalam and send it to 2366. As to engagements, the band accepts invitations to perform. You may visit its website at www.augustmoonph.com or send an e-mail to august_moon2k@yahoo.com.

BLUNDER. This “media” club is now trying to correct a big blunder it has committed when some of its members passed a resolution deleting the name of their former president from the roster of past and present officials. It was during his two-year leadership that the club gained much popularity and unquestioned credibility. But the ex-leader doesn’t want to be associated anymore with the group whose present membership is the butt of jokes in coffee shops. He is also creating his own group which willl be composed of credible media practitioners in town. The recruitment process is going on—by by invitation only.
